Images are intended to illustrate and support discussion about multiple perspectives and the many sides of war.

Access

These images are freely available for download or printing for research or educational purposes. Images are either in the public domain, licenced as creative commons, available for research or educational use, or can be used if the original creator or source is acknowledged (eg War Photographs, NZ History Online). Acknowledgement is provided for images sourced from other libraries.

Do you have photographs about peace, conflict or violence you would like to share with educators? Share your ‘own’ images with other educators for use with their students – please send us the image as a .jpg file.

New Zealand War Memorials

Images from a schools’ district can be more relevant for students. Images of local war memorials can be found on NZ History online.

The following types of images can facilitate discussion on related issues

  • School war memorials – Effects of WW1 on children and schools
  • Rural war memorials – Effects of WW1 on rural communities
  • Memorials associated with key industries – Effects of WW1 on communities and industry – eg railway
  • Roll of Honour images with several of the same family name – Effects of WW1 on families
  • War memorials for WW1 and other wars – Links from WW1 to subsequent wars

Printing

Where possible black and white images are formatted for printing within a 5″x7″ format. Images can be printed onto A4/A5 or onto photographic paper.
